Conservation importance: Mt Elgon slopes supports a rich variety of vegetation, from montane forest to high open moorland dotted with the giant lobelia & groundsel plants.

Wildlife: Includes a variety of small antelopes, elephants and buffaloes that use the lower slopes of the mountain. Forest monkeys including the De Brazz’s monkey, Black-and-white Colombus and the blue monkey. Over 300 bird species including the endangered Lammergeier and African Goshawk.

Tourist activities: Mountain hiking, bird watching, primate and cave exploration. Other attractions include cliffs, waterfalls, gorges, mesas, calderas and hot springs. The most popular areas are the large caves where elephants and buffaloes come to lick the natural salt on the cave walls.
